EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE 1870 6-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE GRILLED ISSUE IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT STAMPS OF THE SET TO OBTAIN IN SUCH SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION. A GREAT CONDITION RARITY.

A review of past auction catalogues serves to demonstrate how scarce this stamp is in sound, centered, original-gum condition. The Golin collection contained an example with disturbed original gum, Lilly's copy was sound with original gum, but off center, as was the example offered in Braus. Klein owned two off-center blocks of four. Most other collectors, including Zoellner and Weisman, had to settle for copies without gum.

Front of stamp slightly dry print and with light strike of cork cancel, back of stamp printed inverted in relation to the front and with strong impression showing part of four stamps, single pulled perf at right

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 3-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE WITH THE DESIGN PRINTED ON BOTH SIDES. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF THE BANK NOTE ISSUES.

The inverted impression on back is a result of the sheet being flipped end-over-end, rather than sideways, before it was put into the press a second time. Some other printed-on-both sides stamps share this characteristic, in particular Scott 78d.

The 3c Grilled Bank Note issue is not known printed on both sides. Scott Catalogue value for Scott 147a has remained virtually unchanged for over 30 years -- it catalogued $1,000.00 in 1971.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 15-CENT UNGRILLED NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE.

The 15c 1870 National Grilled Issue (Scott 141) is widely recognized as an extremely rare stamp in choice original-gum condition. Less well known is the fact that its ungrilled counterpart -- Scott 152 -- is comparably challenging to find in such condition. This stamp has all of the National printing characteristics, but it defies the norm by having exceptional centering and freshness.

EXTREMELY FINE. THE 1870 30-CENT NATIONAL UNGRILLED ISSUE IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT OF ALL BANK NOTE ISSUES TO FIND IN SOUND, WELL-CENTERED, ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

During the past few years, we have offered a few superb original-gum examples of other 30-cent Bank Note Printings, most notably Scott 165. Collectors have recognized the rarity of these stamps, bidding aggressively for the best stamps and often setting record prices. A search of our records and past auction catalogues finds only a few stamps on a par with this example.

EXTREMELY FINE. THE 1870 90-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE IS RARE IN CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

The 1870 90c National Ungrilled Issue, Scott 155, is somewhat overshadowed by its grilled counterpart, Scott 144. Collectors are also misled by the availability of Scott 166, the 90c 1873 Continental. Although the difference in shades is distinct, collectors have a tendency to confuse the two and under-rate the 1870 National printing. Only a few original-gum examples of Scott 155 have the centering, color and freshness of the stamp offered here.

EXTREMELY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1873 CONTINENTAL PRINTING.

The 30c Continental is distinguished from its National counterpart by shade and the shape of the perforations, and from its 1879 American counterpart by paper. Many philatelists -- even intermediate and advanced collectors -- have difficulty classifying Scott 165. When it comes to naming the most elusive Bank Note stamps in choice original-gum condition, the 30c 1873 is often overlooked. However, in most serious collections, it is missing or represented by something that compromises quality. The 30-cent 1870 is frequently found filling the space for Scott 165. The 30c Continental is extremely rare in any original-gum condition.

VERY FINE. LESS THAN 40 OF THE 1875 3-CENT CONTINENTAL SPECIAL PRINTING ARE BELIEVED TO EXIST.

The Scott Catalogue notes that "Although perforated, these stamps were usually cut apart with scissors. As a result, the perforations are often much mutilated and the design is frequently damaged." For additional information, please see an article by William E. Mooz (Chronicle 183), entitled "Scissors Cutting of the 1875 Special Printing Issues." The example offered here, with its design complete and perforations intact on two sides, is among the finer examples known of this rarity.

Sale Number 878, Lot Number 425, 1870-88 Bank Note Issues15c Orange, Special Printing (199), 15c Orange, Special Printing (199)15c Orange, Special Printing (199). Without gum as issued, brilliant color, fine impression, perfect centering with wide balanced margins, insignificant tiny thin spot at left

EXTREMELY FINE GEM APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 15-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. APPROXIMATELY 30 EXIST.

The mesh and weave of the 1880 Special Printing soft paper leaves stamps prone to thinning. We have also seen bright spots in the mesh that are natural to the paper (British philatelists call them "air holes", which are not thins). The tiny characteristic paper irregularity is noted as a "thin spot", but we feel it is likely to be natural.

With 1975 P.F. certificate.
