VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE DISTINCTIVE HOCKANUM FOX. ONLY ONE OR TWO EXAMPLES OF THIS VERSION, WITH THE FOX FACING LEFT, ARE KNOWN ON COVER.
Ex Judge Fay. With 1983 P.F. certificate stating "genuine usage".
VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE RARE HOCKANUM FOX FANCY CANCEL ON A MOST ATTRACTIVE COVER. ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THIS FAMOUS CANCELLATION.
Ex Fay and Sheriff.
EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE CLEAREST STRIKES OF THE NEW YORK CITY "PEACE DOVE" FANCY CANCEL KNOWN ON COVER.
Although collectors have previously given this fancy cancellation the title "Bird on Nest", in our opinion it is more accurately described as the "Peace Dove". The design copies contemporary illustrations of a dove carrying the banner of peace (see lot 3085), and its use in April 1866 coincides with post-Civil War sentiments toward peace and reconstruction. The New York City Soldier's Head cancellation was used within the same month, and the 15c Lincoln commemorative (Scott 77) was issued in April 1866.
We estimate that a total of twelve to fifteen Peace Dove covers exist, about half of which are clear strikes. With the private sale of Louis Grunin's collection of New York City cancellations to John R. Boker Jr. and subsequent acquisition of the Boker fancy cancel collection by a European collector, three of the finer-quality Peace Dove covers have been taken off the market indefinitely.
With 1984 P.F. certificate.
VERY FINE AND BOLD STRIKE OF THE RARE NEW YORK CITY "PEACE DOVE" CANCELLATION.
As noted in the previous description, the design and historical context of this fancy cancel make the description "Peace Dove" much more appropriate than the previous label "Bird in Nest".
With 1988 P.F. certificate
EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL COVER WITH THIS RARE PICTORIAL CANCEL.
Although the Waterbury Padlock has earned far greater recognition, in our opinion the Starkville Padlock is executed with equivalent skill, and the overall appearance of this cover leaves nothing more to be desired.
Ex Sheriff. With 1982 P.F. certificate
