Sale Number 863, Lot Number 241, 3c-5c 1851-56 Issue (Scott 10 to 12)5c Red Brown (12), 5c Red Brown (12)5c Red Brown (12). Original gum, huge margins including part of adjoining stamp at right, rich color

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST OF THE FEW KNOWN 5-CENT 1856 STAMPS WITH ORIGINAL GUM. A KEY CLASSIC UNITED STATES RARITY.

When this stamp was offered in the 1976 Grunin sale, there was a faint gum stain which has now been removed and no longer affects the stamp's appearance. The P.F. also records a 1992 certificate noting the faint gum stain and a small corner crease, but we do not see the corner crease.

Ex Grunin and Golin. With 1989 and 1999 P.S.E. certificates (both stating "it is genuine, unused original gum")
