VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1862 ISSUE IN THE RED BROWN SHADE. A STAMP OF PHENOMENAL COLOR AND BEAUTY.

This stamp is very scarce in original-gum condition. The brilliant paper and incredibly vibrant color of this stamp are found only on a few examples, probably originating from the same multiple.

Sale Number 863, Lot Number 324, 1861-66 Issue (Scott 72 to 78a)5c Brown (76), 5c Brown (76)5c Brown (76). Original gum, intense color and proof-like impression, remarkably fresh paper with long full perfs all around

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN EXCEPTIONAL ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1863 5-CENT BROWN. A SUPERB STAMP.

The 5c 1861-68 Issue was printed from plates with closely-spaced subjects that left little room for the large 12-gauge perforations. The Brown shade, No. 76, is scarce in original-gum condition, and truly rare in this high grade.

Sale Number 863, Lot Number 326, 1861-66 Issue (Scott 72 to 78a)15c Black (77), 15c Black (77)15c Black (77). Original gum, extraordinary margins and centering, fine impression on bright paper

EXTREMELY FINE AND CHOICE. WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS FOR RARE SHADES, THE 1866 15-CENT LINCOLN COULD WELL BE THE RAREST OF THE 1861-66 SERIES IN CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

In our catalogue descriptions, we have emphasized the rarity of 1861-66 stamps in choice original-gum condition. With the exception of the rare 5c and 24c shades, our experience shows that the 15c Black is the most difficult stamp to obtain in sound, choice original-gum condition. It is most often found without gum or disturbed gum, or the fully-gummed examples are off center. The block of six (straight edge at left), ex Caspary, Lilly and Ishikawa, is well-centered with original gum, but our search of numerous other major auction sales produced few other examples apart from the block. Therefore, this stamp could be the rarest face-different design of the 1861-66 series in choice original-gum condition.

Sale Number 863, Lot Number 327, 1861-66 Issue (Scott 72 to 78a)24c Lilac (78), 24c Lilac (78)24c Lilac (78). Original gum, unusually well-centered, attractive deep shade and proof-like impression on bright fresh paper

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. LIKE THE OTHER HIGH DENOMINATION 1861 ISSUES, THE 24-CENT 1861-63 ISSUE IS EXTREMELY RARE IN SOUND AND WELL-CENTERED ORIGINAL GUM CONDITION. A FAR GREATER CHALLENGE TO ACQUIRE IN THIS GRADE THAN MANY COLLECTORS REALIZE.

Scott values, which are influenced by the quantity of poorly centered copies extant, are irrelevant in the current market for original-gum classics.

Sale Number 863, Lot Number 328, 1861-66 Issue (Scott 72 to 78a)24c Grayish Lilac (78a), 24c Grayish Lilac (78a)24c Grayish Lilac (78a). Block of four, original gum, lightly hinged, rich color in the true Grayish Lilac shade, detailed impression, remarkably well-centered, very fresh and intact

EXTREMELY FINE GEM ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 24-CENT GRAYISH LILAC. A RARE BLOCK IN THE FINEST CONDITION WITH OUTSTANDING COLOR AND FRESHNESS.

The 24c Grayish Lilac is an incredibly rare stamp in choice original-gum condition. Most of the remaining well-centered sound blocks have been broken for singles, This block is an extremely rare exception. Very few multiples of this issue in this quality remain.

With 2002 P.F. certificate for block of nine, this being the bottom right corner block
