Clear provisional marking on cover addressed to Ashville Ala., Oct. 2, 1861 pencil docketing at left, fresh and Very Fine, rare, this is the earliest of the three known used examples of this provisional, described and illustrated in Nov. 1960 issue of Confederate Philatelist, illustrated in Crown book, with 1991 P.F. certificate which states that "it is a genuine postmaster provisional entire, but there is no evidence it was postally used", an opinion which is based on lack of a town datestamp
