EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE SET OF SHEETS OF THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE ISSUE.
One of the last remaining sets of sheets in existence.
VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF A COMPLETE JAMESTOWN SET ON COVER, OF WHICH FOUR ARE KNOWN. A GREAT 20TH CENTURY COMMEMORATIVE RARITY.
R. C. Munroe serviced all four of the covers dated May 10, 1907, which were sent by registered mail to Springfield and have his written return address on the reverse. There is one cover known with a single 5c Jamestown and one 5c Lincoln (304) dated May 9 from Fortress Monroe Va. to Boston (the earliest use of the 5c). The four Munroe covers with complete sets are the second earliest use of the 5c and the earliest use of the complete set on cover.
The last time a Munroe cover appeared at public auction was Sept. 1997 when it realized $16,000 hammer. Prior to 1997, the last Munroe cover appeared at public auction in our 1981 Rarities sale, where it realized $9,000 hammer.
