Sale Number 825, Lot Number 1663, Local Posts (Boyds to Cheever & Towle)Boyd's City Express Post, Nov. 26 9, Boyd's City Express Post, Nov. 26 9Boyd's City Express Post, Nov. 26 9. Oval datestamp with "Paid/J.T.B." in frame, red "Broadway Post Office Nov. 26" double-circle datestamp struck once, overstruck by same marking with Nov. 27 date, matching "Paid" in wide arc on yellow cover White Street address, Very Fine; the Broadway Post Office double-circle is an extremely rare marking -- beginning in late 1859 and into 1860 examples are found used in conjunction with Boyd's markings, which has led to speculation that an arrangement existed between Lockwood's Broadway and Chatham Square posts and Boyd's, whereby letters would be received at the former offices and delivered by the latter -- a similar cover realized $950 hammer in Golden sale (see also lot 1674 in this sale)

Ample margins, faded pen cancel, long tear across stamp sealed (adhesive has darkened)

ONE OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 10-CENT TYPE III STAMP, THE SETTING FROM WHICH THE SIDE ORNAMENTS HAVE BEEN REMOVED.

At the time of the Golden sale, our records contained just one confirmed example of 33L7, the Type III setting in Red: the cover from the Worthington, Caspary and Golden collections. We were unaware that Richard Schwartz owned this stamp. The stamp on the cover was moved from the flap to the front, and the long tear in this stamp suggests that it was also used to seal the flap and was torn upon opening.
