Sale 800, Lot 388, Confederate StatesGoliad Tex., 5c Black on Gray (29X6). The second type with postmaster's name, margins touching ornaments on three sides, slightly in at right, ms. cancel

A FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS GREAT POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL RARITY. ONLY ONE PAIR AND THREE SINGLES RECORDED.

Despite Dietz and Scott listings, which indicate that this stamp is of equal rarity to other Goliad types, the fact is that only five examples of the 5c with postmaster's name are recorded. Two are contained in a pair showing the "GOILAD" error (ex Caspary). One is on blue paper and defective (tied on a cover with one stamp removed, ex Ferrary). The two used singles of the 5c Type II are both pen-cancelled; the other stamp is repaired (ex Hessel). We know of no Scot6t 29X6's on cover. The 5c Type II was probably issued in 1863 or 1864 during a shortage of regular issues - at that time the basic letter rate was 10c, explaining the great rarity of 5c stamps.
