EXTREMELY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED BLOCK SHOWING THE PLATE NUMBER AND WITH ORIGINAL GUM. A MAGNIFICENT SHOWPIECE OF THE FINEST QUALITY.

The Chapin census records two blocks of four with plate numbers. The second block has manuscript "X"'s, and is most likely a presentation proof which was not regularly issued. This block is therefore unique for the issued stamp.

A FINE EXAMPLE OF THE EXTREMELY RARE TIENTSIN OVAL, OF WHICH FEWER THAN A DOZEN STRIKES ARE KNOWN.

The Tientsin oval was used as a transit marking on the backs of covers passing through the U.S. Postal Agency. Of the dozen or so examples known, only a few show the oval datestamp used to cancel the stamp at Tientsin.

Two large multiples, each on similar gray pieces, first is block of 18 tied by "New York" registry ovals and blue crayon registry marking, second piece contains a block of 24 and a pair similarly tied and with part of Baring Brothers & Co. printed address, the second piece also bears a single 10c Brown (209), few faults incl. creases and two stamps with piece missing, still Fine and impressive multiples, assuming that these came from the same package, the postage would have been $37.90, a small fortune at the time, probably the largest recorded usage, Scott Retail as used singles is $7,980.00
