THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY CONFEDERATE VALENTINE COVER KNOWN TO EXIST.
The address panel is covered with an elaborate hand-drawn watercolor-and-ink design including floral decoration and a Confederate Flag. The original enclosure is a Valentine in circular format with spiraling floral design and romantic prose on both sides. On one side is a Confederate flag (15 stars!), and on the other side are entwined hearts at the center, signed "MS to DEB" (David E. Bushong). The stamp and cover have minor creases
Under the hardships and shortages of the Confederate South, there were rare instances when an expression of sentiment and beauty could occur. The famous "Rose" wallpaper cover, while serving a much different purpose, is the only other Confederate cover we know of that rivals this Valentine cover.
