BARBADOS, 1852, (2p) Grayish Slate on Blued Paper (3a; SG 2a). Large margins, tied by "1" oval cancel on double-rate cover to Philadelphia, backstamped "Barbadoes Au 11 1854", "St. Thomas Au 15 1854", "Kingston Jamaica Au 22 1854", red crayon "1/-" rate corrected to "2/-" for double rate, black "New-York Ship 12 cts Sep. 25" circular due datestamp (2 x 5c plus 2c ship fee), the cover is toned and a bit fragile at edges, still Fine, an extremely rare use of the 2p Grayish Slate, which was normally bisected and used as a 1p stamp (listed only that way in Gibbons), though in this instance it clearly prepaid the double rate, with 1958 R.P.S. certificate
