5c Ultramarine, Red Ovpt. (59). Three, each tied by "Washington D.C./Dec. 28 '96" machine cancels on separate U.S. Senate covers to Honolulu, all to one correspondent (C.V. Sturdevant). Ministers L.A. Thurston and Frank P. Hastings of the Hawaiian Legation in Washington, D.C., who fought for annexation of Hawaii from 1893 to 1898, provided postage to supportive members of the legislature. Mr. Sturdevant may have been a member of the Annexation Club of Honolulu, an organization started by Thurston in late 1893. The latest (9:30pm) dated received a "25/CTMS/T" due marking, another with U.S. 1895 2c Carmine (267), went through unscathed, each with San Francisco and Honolulu backstamps last with small faults, Fine-Very Fine, scarce and interesting study
