AN EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS EARLY NUMERAL

The color and impression of this stamp are identical to the 2c Plate 1-A Crocker block of six (lot #) and Staggered Block (lot #). Viewed from the back, the paper is semi-opaque with no bleed-thru of the ink - another characteristic shared by the Crocker block and Staggered Block.

Sale Number 769, Lot Number 183, 1859-65 Numeral Issue (Scott 12)1859, 1c Light Blue, Bluish White (12), 1859, 1c Light Blue, Bluish White (12)1859, 1c Light Blue, Bluish White (12). Plate 2-A, Ty. X-III (Westerberg Pos. 2-1 as a straddle pair), horizontal pair on piece, perfect strike of red "POSTAGE PAID" oval handstamp, left stamp slightly cut into and creased, right stamp with large margins, minor overall toning

ONE OF TWO RECORDED USED 1859 1-CENT BLUE NUMERAL PAIRS. NO LARGER MULTIPLE IS KNOWN.

Based on the Westerberg plating study of the early Numerals, this Type X-III pair is a straddle-pane multiple from position 2 of the left pane and 1 of the right pane. However, we believe that Westerberg's plating does not account for all of the printings and that the vertical rows were transposed in certain printings. If we are correct, then this is a normal pair with 4mm gutter between rows.

Illustrated in Westerberg. Ex Ostheimer, Middendorf.

THE FINER OF TWO RECORDED PAIRS OF THE 1859 1-CENT BLUE NUMERAL

The shade and paper of this pair are very similar to the Plate 1-A printings offered in lot #-#. In the Hind sale, this pair had a large right margin, which was later trimmed, presumably by Caspary. If Westerberg's arrangement of types in Plate 2-B is correct, then this pair comes from Positions 7 and 9, and the wide right margin was a gutter between vertical rows. However, if the vertical rows were transposed in this printing, then this pair comes from Positions 8 and 10.

Ex Hind, Caspary, Middendorf, Ostheimer.
