Horizontal pair, large margins on two sides showing bits of adjoining stamps, just barely in at left and touched at bottom, beautiful rich color, red "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Mar. 16" large cds on double-rate cover to Charlestown Mass., the pair is tied by "San Francisco Cal. Apr. 5, 1858 12" integral rate cds - realizing this was a double-rate letter, the S.F. post office struck its "SHIP" handstamp over the "12" rate and applied the "22" handstamp for postage due (2 x 10c plus 2c ship fee) - carried on the Golden Gate (cleared Mar. 16, arrived Apr. 4), in original condition as found with a slight vertical fold at center and minor edge wear, Very Fine, pairs of the 5c Second Printing are extremely rare in used condition, we record just four examples on cover: this double-rate usage with U.S. postage unpaid; a double-rate cover to Robbinston, Maine, with United States 12c 1851 and 10c 1857 Issues (private collection); a double-rate 1861 cover with the 13c Kamehameha III stamp used as a 12c provisional and U.S. postage (ex Knapp and Adm. III (33), 12c clear to ample margins, internal tear and slight toning, 10c few toned perfs, rich color, red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Jan. 24" large cds on cover to Robbinston, Me., two strikes of "San Francisco Cal. Feb. 10(?), 1860" cds tying one of the 5c Kamehameha III stamps, carried on the Comet, which cleared Honolulu on January 24 and arrived on February 10, at which time the U.S. post office officially began forwarding all mail by the Butterfield stage service to St. Louis unless specifically marked for steamship service via Panama; vertical fold clear of stamps, some light toning, otherwise Fine, an extremely rare double-rate cover with the correct franking for 10c Hawaiian postage, 20c U.S. postage and 2c ship captain's fee - we know of one other similarly franked cover from this correspondence (private collection)

Feb. 10), a bit worn and toned with age, still Very Fine, only a few Kamehameha III covers are known with this scarce U.S. route marking; beginning in January 1860 the U.S. post office began forwarding mail from San Francisco by the Butterfield stage service to St. Louis via Los Angeles, unless letters were specifically marked "Via Panama" - the "Overland" handstamp appears to have been an explanatory marking - ex Tows, Adm. V (35), red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid [date?]" large cds, all stamps lifted and reaffixed, tied by "San Francisco Cal. (Aug?) 15, 1861" cds on gold, red and blue Eagle & Shield Union patriotic cover, "The Union, it must and shall be preserved" below, addressed to Dubuque, Iowa, from the Zublin correspondence, some light soiling around edges and gum toning around perfs

OF THE FOUR CIVIL WAR PATRIOTICS USED FROM HAWAII THAT WE RECORD, ONLY THIS COVER IS A MIXED FRANKING

Assuming that the San Francisco datestamp reads August 15, 1861 (only the day and year are clear), this cover was probably carried on the Speedwell, which cleared Honolulu on July 22 and arrived in San Francisco on August 14.

Our records contain just three examples of Civil War patriotic stationery used from Hawaii. This is the earliest usage, the only mixed franking, and the only U.S. 1857 Issue franking. The others are: a 12c 1861 on Standing Liberty red and blue patriotic cover postmarked at Honolulu on April 18, 1863; and two small red-and-blue patriotic emblem covers used between islands, each with a 2c Kamehameha IV stamp. Other examples, if any, must be extremely rare.

Apr. 5, 1861" cds, matching "SHIP" and "10" due handstamps; carried on the Yankee (cleared Mar. 14, arrived Apr. 1), which was the first sailing to arrive from Hawaii after the official suspension of the Butterfield stage route due to the impending Civil War - all mail was sent by ship via Panama between April 1 and July 1 (Gregory) - why the 12c 1851 was not accepted in Honolulu cannot be explained; repaired tear thru markings, otherwise Fine, unusual usage
