EXTREMELY FINE AND UNIQUE MIXED FRANKING USAGE WITH THE 1851 ISSUE

Mailed to a Mrs. Charles Emsfield of Newark, in care of Hon. J.C. Hornblower - a former chief justice of New Jersey and in 1856 the Vice President of the Philadelphia Republican convention that nominated John C. Fremont for the presidency. Hornblower or his secretary applied the 3c stamp and readdressed it to Chester Pa., this time in care of a Mrs. Richards. Docketing on back indicates it was received the next day by Mrs. Emsfield.

A beautiful rarity and one of the key covers of United States or Italian States postal history. Ex Knapp, offered in our "Gems of Postal History" sale in April 1968 and not offered since that time

Oc 31, 1856" datestamp on orange cover used from Canada to oil merchant F.S. Pease and accepted as fully paid; the bottom right stamp was originally bisected to more properly pay the 10c rate, but the sender apparently had second thoughts as the right half was put back before being postmarked; stamps creased before use and edges of cover expertly strengthened, still Fine, a fascinating and probably unique usage. Examples of the 1851 Issue from Canada are far rarer than the 1847 Issue similarly used; accompanying this is a ca. 1854 Buffalo advertising cover showing F.S. Pease's oil barrel corner card
