Jefferson Davis. ANS as President on back of a 2 page Sept. 1862 letter from a Mississippi inventor, W.M. Clement: Secty of Navy please examine and report. J.D." with additional pencil note initialed by Stephen R. Mallory ("S.R.M. Sec Ny"). Clement's letter describes two inventions, one for throwing small shot in the enemy's lines at long range, and the other being a submerged short cannon attached to a shaft intended to come in contact wih the hull of a boat; originally two sketches were enclosed; the latter is still extant, showing a pen and pencil drawing of a Union boat coming in contact with Clement's cannon & shaft creation. Ink erosion in sketch and letter with some wear, unusual and interesting pair
