One explanation for this marking states that Dutton as postmaster of Point of Rocks conducted clandestine ferriage of thru-the-lines mail - the 25 represented his fee; 1862 and 1865 Post Office Lists do not mention any J.B. Dutton at Point of Rocks; whatever the explanation, the marking is of the period and deserves research

Johnson & Co. in Newark, mended area at left where opened along with pencil note "Not [?] Opened by J.C. Johnson,"; since an entire uncanceled stamp was once on the cover, J.C.
