Single, cut in at R. and B., tied by negative Star of David cancel on mourning cover from New Haven, Ct., original enclosure dated Mar. 14, 1867 from a young girl, S. Emilia Phelps, writing the Rev. George Gorham about the Scriptures, cover with tiny edge wear, proof partly lifted to confirm identification, Fine, Although postally used proofs of the 1861-67 Issue are known, they are virtually all philatelic in origin and from the re-issue plates of 1875; how Emilia Phelps obtained a card proof in 1867 will probably remain a mystery - maybe a member of her family worked for the National Bank Note Co., or else a quantity of proofs saw use as postage currency during the war. In any case, a remarkable and perhaps unique contemporary usage

Re-Directed. Two-line imprint on orange cover to Hamilton N.Y., 3c Rose (65) tied by bold "Chicago Ill. Jul. 6, 1862" double circle, small edge tears and old tape stains on back only, Fine

The Hungarian was an Allan Line steamer that left Liverpool in Feb. 1860, bound for Portland Me. and last seen on the 20th; the next morning, six mail bags washed up on shore. The vessel was later found, but there were no survivors (all 205 passengers perished); the disaster was blamed on the "grave dereliction" of a Nova Scotia lighthouse attendant. This imprint was applied to outer envelopes containing salvaged letters and 2-1/2 years later the post office was still processing this mail. A rare and remarkable usage, ex Meyer
