AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE USE OF THE 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE TO PREPAY THE INTER-CONSULAR RATE BETWEEN JAPAN AND CHINA

The stamp on this cover prepays the 6c rate between U.S. post offices in China and Japan, which was introduced April 1, 1870. Examples of this rate paid with the 1869 Issue are extremely rare. The well-researched Ishikawa sale catalogue of U.S. Post Offices in Japan (Sotheby's, July 7, 1981) contained just four 1869 inter-consular covers (three from Shanghai, one from Japan) and stated that only five or six were known. It referred to Ishikawa's 6c 1869 cover from Shanghai to Japan as "the only known example."
