Sale 973, Lot 62, 1875 Reprint of 1857-60 Issue3c Scarlet, Reprint (41). Without gum as issued, phenomenal centering with Jumbo margins well clear of framelines on all sides, rich color and proof-like impression

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. WITHOUT QUESTION, THE FINEST KNOWN EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1857 REPRINT. AN ASTONISHING STAMP WHICH HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95 JUMBO BY P.S.E. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF THE 1857-60 ISSUE REPRINTS ABOVE THE ONE-CENT VALUE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE.

A survey of P.S.E. graded reprints of the 1857-60 Issue reveals a fact that will come as no surprise to serious students of these stamps. Sound, extremely well-centered examples are almost non-existent. Apart from the 1c value, which was issued in a quantity (3,846) approximately eight times as large as most of the other values, this stamp is the only example to grade above a 95. The 1c value has a single example graded 98J and five graded 95. Among the 479 issued of the 3c, there is one example at each grade from 90 to 95 in addition to this example. The 5c, 10c and 90c values each have a single example graded 95. It is quite likely that this is not only the finest example of the 3c, but ranks among the handful of finest extant of the entire Issue.

Only 479 sold. Ex Engel, Klein and Zoellner. With 1958, 1988 and 1998 P.F. certificates. With 2007 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ does not price this stamp above a 95, $12,600 as 95)
