Paid Sep. 20" (1861) circular datestamp on small cover to Guttstadt, Prussia, partly clear "N.York Hamb. Pkt. VERY FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARILY UNCOMMON FRANKING FOR THE 15-CENT RATE TO GERMANY BY DIRECT MAIL TO HAMBURG.

According to North Atlantic Mail Sailings 1840-75, the HAPAG steamer Hammonia left New York on Sep. 21, 1861, arriving at Hamburg on Oct. 3. If this sailing information is correct, we do not know why four days lapsed before the Hamburg office datestamped the letter.

EXTREMELY FINE. A SPECTACULAR AND VERY RARE FRANKING FOR THE DOUBLE 34-CENT RATE TO CHILE BY AMERICAN AND BRITISH PACKETS VIA PANAMA. ALMOST CERTAINLY A UNIQUE USE OF THE 1861 5-CENT BROWN YELLOW (OR BUFF).

The 68c postage on this cover to Chile correctly paid the double 34c rate, which included 10c for American Packet service to Panama and 24c for the 12p British Packet rate to Chile. Such covers were normally marked with a credit to England; however, in this case no credit was applied, perhaps because the letter originated in California and was not marked at a U.S. foreign-mail exchange office.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. PROBABLY A UNIQUE USE OF A 24-CENT 1861 ISSUE MULTIPLE TO PAY THE DOUBLE 36-CENT RATE TO ZANZIBAR BY BRITISH MAIL VIA MARSEILLES, WHICH EXISTED BRIEFLY FROM MARCH 1868 THRU DECEMBER 1869.

Although the London receiving date is difficult to read, this was probably carried on the Cunarder Java, which departed New York on July 29, 1868, arriving at Queenstown on August 7. We recall handling only one other cover to Zanzibar at the 36c British Mail rate via Marseilles (Sale 764, lot 1760). This cover is the only double 36c rate usage to Zanzibar known to us. The 24c strip is in the distinct 1867-68 shade associated with the 24c F Grill (Scott 99).

VERY FINE AND CHOICE STAMP ON A BEAUTIFUL FRESH COVER. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE QUINTESSENTIAL BLACKISH VIOLET SHADE OF THE 24-CENT 1861 ISSUE. IT WAS ACQUIRED BY THE CONSIGNOR IN THE 1941 KNAPP SALE AND HAS BEEN KEPT IN THE DARK FOR 66 YEARS, THEREBY PRESERVING THIS RARE SHADE TO A DEGREE WE HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.

The 24c Blackish Violet, Scott 78c, is probably the rarest and most misunderstood of the various 24c shades. Our firm has offered almost all of the certified examples, including the finest original-gum and used off-cover copies. The cover offered here is remarkable not only as a very rare use of the 24c Blackish Violet on cover, but the fact that it was last purchased in 1941 and has not been exposed to light for 66 years makes this the truest Blackish Violet shade we have ever encountered. It is so intense, we worry that other certified Blackish Violet stamps would pale in comparison (this stamp should definitely not be the standard for Scott 78c, because it is simply too good).
