Sale 925, Lot 1450, California City Letter Express Co, California Penny Post Co.California Penny Post Co., San Francisco, 2c Black Entire (34LU1). Printed frank with instructions for users, 3c Brownish Carmine (11), ample to large margins including part of stamp at left, in at right, tied by bold "San Francisco Cal. 30 Aug." (1855) circular datestamp, on entire to Marysville street address, backstamped "DETAINED FOR POSTAGE"%$ in large block letters and "San Francisco Cal. 30 Aug. 3 Paid" integral-rate circular datestamp, "Paid" straightline on front, docketed "1855 Oct. 17 Filed" on back, faint stains and vertical fold

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION OF THE CALIFORNIA PENNY POST 2-CENT FRANK AND 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO "DETAINED FOR POSTAGE" HANSTAMP.

This inter-city express and local post operated for about one year in 1855 and 1856. Examples of its 2c printed envelopes, which paid the rate for delivery to the post office, are extremely rare (six reported in Lyons census in July 2005 Penny Post). In this instance, it appears that the letter was placed in the San Francisco post office without a 3c stamp, which was required on inter-city Penny Post mail. The post office marked the letter "Detained for Postage," and, on August 30, 1855, the 3c stamp was applied and cancelled. Another possibility is that the 3c stamp was not recognized by the San Francisco post office, which had an ongoing feud with Goodwin over his operation, and that the "3 Paid" integral-rate circular datestamp indicates additional payment was received in coin.
