EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF FOUR RECORDED TETE-BECHE MULTIPLES OF THE 20-CENTAVOS AND THE SMALLER OF TWO BLOCKS CONTAINING THE INVERTED TRANSFER. TRULY ONE OF THE ARISTOCRATS OF SOUTH AMERICAN PHILATELY.

The 20c lithographic stone that specialists label "A" contained two significant transfer errors and one noteworthy retouched transfer variety. The first error is an inverted 20c transfer in Position 13, the second stamp in the second row. The other error is found in the fourth row, also the second stamp, Position 35, which is a 5c denomination transferred to the 20c stone by mistake. The prominent retouched variety is Position 25, the third stamp in the third row, which has been extensively redrawn on the stone to correct a poor transfer.

The 5c-20c se-tenant is represented by four multiples, all unused (no used examples are known) -- they are listed in the descriptions of lots 1338-1340. There are only four examples of the 20c tete-beche (three unused and one used pair), as follows: 1) Positions 13-14, horizontal pair, unused (no gum), bend and thin spot, ex Dr. Goeggel; 2) Positions 12-13, horizontal pair, used with "Cartagena/Franca" oval, ex Ferrary, Caspary, Nueberger and Dr. Goeggel; 3) Positions 1-4/12-15, top left corner sheet margin block of 8, original gum, ex Crocker, Newbury, Neuburger, Londono and "Islander", the block offered here; and 4) Positions 1-10 through 45-54, block of 50, ex Ehrenbach, Newbury, Neuburger and Dr. Goeggel.
