Sale 1226, Lot 1338, Colombia - 1859 First Issue, 20cCOLOMBIA, 1859, 5c and 20c Blue, Se-Tenant (6b). Stone A, Positions 24-26/35-37/46-48, block of nine containing 5c transfer error (Position 35) on plate of 20c, forming a se-tenant multiple with adjoining stamps, Position 25 is the retouched transfer, original gum, large margins, beautiful rich color and fresh paper, couple usual slight gum creases

EXTREMELY FINE. A SPECTACULAR BLOCK FROM THE 20-CENTAVOS LITHOGRAPHIC STONE, CONTAINING THE 5-CENTAVOS TRANSFER ERROR. THIS IS THE SMALLER OF ONLY TWO SE-TENANT BLOCKS KNOWN. ONE OF THE FAMOUS ARISTOCRATS OF SOUTH AMERICAN PHILATELY.

The 20c lithographic stone that specialists label "A" contained two significant transfer errors and one noteworthy retouched transfer variety. The first error is an inverted 20c transfer in Position 13, the second stamp in the second row. The other error is found in the fourth row, also the second stamp, Position 35, which is a 5c denomination transferred to the 20c stone by mistake. The prominent retouched variety is Position 25, the third stamp in the third row, which has been extensively redrawn on the stone to correct a poor transfer.

There are only four examples of the 20c tete-beche (three unused and one used pair), which are listed in the description of lot 1341. The 5c-20c se-tenant is represented by four multiples, all unused (no used examples are known). These four se-tenant multiples are as follows: 1) Positions 34-35, 20c-5c horizontal pair, original gum, left sheet margin, small thin, ex Ferrary, Caspary, Lilly and "Isleham" (Peyton), offered in this sale as lot 1339; 2) Positions 35-36, 5c-20c horizontal pair, light Blue shade, original gum, small thin, offered in this sale as lot 1340; 3) Positions 24-26/35-37/46-47, block of nine, ex T. W. Hall, Crocker, Newbury, Neuburger and "Islander", acquired by G.N.J. in a Cherrystone sale, the block offered here; and 4) Positions 1-10 through 45-54, block of 50, ex Ehrenbach, Newbury, Neuburger and Dr. Goeggel.

It is remarkable that three of the four 5c-20c se-tenant multiples are offered in this sale of the Gordon N. John collection.

Ex Thomas William Hall, Crocker, Newbury, Neuburger and "Islander" (Siegel Sale 957, lot 187). Acquired by Gordon N. John in a subsequent Cherrystone sale.
