EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A TRULY SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 50-CENT 1902 ISSUE, GRADED SUPERB 98 -- THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO ANY MINT NEVER-HINGED SCOTT 310 BY PROFESSIONAL STAMP EXPERTS.
Anyone who has been building a gem, never-hinged set of the 1902 Issue will immediately recognize the rarity of the 50c value in such superlative quality. It is one of the most challenging of the series to find both never-hinged and with perfect centering. This is confirmed by the fact that out of 53 never-hinged examples of Scott No. 310 submitted to P.S.E. for grading, only this example achieved the lofty grade of Superb 98. Quite likely this is the finest never-hinged example in existence.
With 1998 P.F., 2010 P.S.E. and 2014 P.S.A.G. certificates (latter two grading Superb 98; SMQ $23,500.00)

HISTORY AND COMMENTARY
The Wide Selvage Makes the Difference
The 50¢ is the first denomination of the 1902 Issue printed from a single plate--number 1602. Top plate positions, which are the most desirable, tend to have narrow selvage. The example offered here is the exception. Power Search found only two from the top position, both with narrow selvage. Todd had two others with wide selvage, but one has disturbed gum and another has a piece out of the selvage. The example offered here may well be the finest full top plate block of this issue in existence.
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 50-CENT 1902 ISSUE. ESPECIALLY SCARCE WITH THE PLATE NUMBER SELVAGE.
Ex "Vineyard". With 2003 P.F. and 1993 and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $4,500.00).
FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE PLATE BLOCK OF THE 50-CENT 1902 ISSUE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE FROM THE TOP POSITION.
As an indication of rarity, none was offered in our sales of the MLG or Saddleback collections. We have offered two others since 2000, including one from the top position. Prior to that, one has to go back to 1992 to find another in our auctions from the top position (which was the same one we offered in 2015).
