EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT 1902 ISSUE GRADED SUPERB 98 JUMBO -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE.

Ex "Elite", "Westchester" and Merlin. With 2004 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $2,950.00). Only one grades higher (at 100, realized $6,500 hammer in our 2016 "Hanover" sale) and one other shares this desirable grade (we haven't offered the other).

May 7, 1903" circular datestamp on cover addressed to a passenger bound for the May 9th sailing of the S.S. Atlas from New York, instructions in address say if too late the letter should be forwarded to Barranquilla, Colombia, the letter did in fact arrive too late and was struck with May 10 backstamp and "NY T" circular handstamp to indicate forwarding postage due from recipient, two singles Colombia 1902 20c Violet (202) applied for forwarding postage upon arrival and tied by purple Barranquilla May 28 circular datestamps, 2c stamp with faulty top right corner, right Colombian stamp with margin flaws from placement at edge of cover, some small adhesive stains, still appears Very Fine, a rare U.S.-Colombian mixed franking

Sale Number 1165, Lot Number 128, 1902-08 Issue: Issued Stamps, 1c-50c2c Carmine (301), 2c Carmine (301)2c Carmine (301). Block of four with top selvage signed by Clair Aubrey Huston, h.r. including reattaching selvage, Fine, R. Ostrander Smith left the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on Nov. 19, 1902, he was replaced by Huston as Chief Designer, who paid tribute to Smith by signing this block of Smith designed stamps, interestingly the first issue designed by Huston was the 2c Shield, which replaced the poorly received 2c Flags issue offered here

Jun. 17 12-M 1903" flag machine cancel on Legation of the United States cover from China to Dover Me., slightly reduced at left, minor tape stains on edges, Very Fine mixed franking, under international conventions mail between foreign service posts and Washington could be carried by sealed diplomatic pouch, therefore the Chinese stamp was not cancelled until arrival in Washington, upon receipt in Washington letters with proper U.S. postage would be dispatched in the mails
