Sale Number 1179, Lot Number 2333, 1901 Pan-American Issue (Scott 294-299)2c Pan-American, Center Inverted (295a), 2c Pan-American, Center Inverted (295a)2c Pan-American, Center Inverted (295a). Bright colors and well-centered, machine cancel leaves entire design clearly visible, few flaws including slight creasing, small tear at bottom and reperfed at top but without repairs

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY SEVEN USED EXAMPLES OF THE 2-CENT PAN-AMERICAN INVERT ARE KNOWN, AND NONE ARE SOUND.

Our census of the 2c Pan-American Invert in used condition records only seven copies, and is available at our website at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/295a . None are sound -- two are reperfed, one has a tear and another is thinned. Three others have minor flaws.

Census No. 295a-CAN-05. Ex Curtis. With 1970 and 2018 P.F. certificates. With 2013 P.S.E. certificate which mentions a tiny corner repair -- it is not repaired and the 2018 P.F. certificate confirms this. In our opinion this is very undercatalogued in Scott -- the unused invert catalogues $55,000.00 in Scott and is significantly more plentiful with approximately 64 unused singles known -- the same price is given for the used invert with only seven known.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY SEVEN USED EXAMPLES OF THE 2-CENT PAN-AMERICAN INVERT ARE KNOWN. A GREAT INVERT RARITY.

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE FINEST OF THE SEVEN RECORDED USED EXAMPLES OF THE 2-CENT PAN-AMERICAN INVERT. IT IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE SHOWING A DATE OF ANY KIND. ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF USED UNITED STATES STAMPS AND 20TH CENTURY PHILATELY.

Considerably less is known about the discovery of the 2c Pan-American Invert than is known of the 1c and 4c Inverts. No 2c is known on cover and only one is recorded on an undated piece. Of the used examples, we record the following: 1) Census No. 295a-CAN-01, registry cancel, thin spot, slight creases, corner crease ending in small tear at top right, 1999 Rarities sale, lot 173, realized $11,500 hammer; 2) Census No. 295a-CAN-02, machine cancel, stitch watermark, vertical crease, 1980 Rarities sale, lot 227; 3) Census No. 295a-CAN-03, Rochester N.Y. Of the seven recorded used examples, only this stamp is dated (February 26, ca. 1902).

EXTREMELY FINE CENTERING AND APPEARANCE. ONE OF THE BEST-CENTERED EXAMPLES OF THIS GREAT TWENTIETH CENTURY INVERT RARITY. ONLY SEVEN USED EXAMPLES ARE KNOWN. FROM A RECENTLY DISCOVERED FIND.

Only one other of the seven recorded used 2c Pan-American Inverts compares with the stamp offered here in terms of centering. The other well-centered example has a small tear at bottom and is on a piece. Every other known used example of the 2c invert is either thinned and creased. Two are also reperfed and one has clipped perfs.

The stamp offered here was recently discovered in a collection formed by a missionary during the first part of this century
