Sale Number 1239, Lot Number 583, 1894-95 Issue thru 1898 Trans-Mississippi Issue$2.00 Trans-Mississippi (293), $2.00 Trans-Mississippi (293)$2.00 Trans-Mississippi (293). Mint N.H. with top plate no. 613 selvage, deep rich color, wonderful centering for this difficult top value

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL MINT NEVER-HINGED PLATE NUMBER SINGLE OF THE $2.00 TRANS-MISSISSIPPI ISSUE.

According to Brookman, the design is based on the famed Eads Bridge that spans the Mississippi River at St. Louis. The river has long been considered the dividing line between East and West, and is a fitting theme for this issue.

All of the $2.00 Trans-Mississippi stamps were printed in a single day's run on June 3, 1898. The $2.00 was printed in sheets that have narrower spacing between the horizontal rows than between the vertical columns. For this reason, it is extremely difficult to obtain stamps with top and bottom margins that equal the sides. This makes it difficult to fit the collecting criteria of most Gem-quality collectors. The stamp offered here, which is Mint Never-Hinged with choice centering and fresh color, is a true condition rarity. The plate number selvage adds to its desirability

Mint N.H., top sheet selvage with imprint, perfectly centered, remarkably wide margins framing the design with white even borders, intense color and incredibly detailed impression showing the city buildings in the background, bright and fresh

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN EXCEPTIONALLY CHOICE MINT NEVER-HINGED $2.00 TRANS-MISSISSIPPI -- ONE OF THE MOST ELUSIVE OF ALL COMMEMORATIVES IN THIS SUPERB QUALITY.

The $2.00 is widely recognized as the most challenging of the Trans-Mississippi Issue to obtain in Extremely Fine grade in any condition (Mint N.H, hinged or used). With the break-up of the ex-Weill block of ten, a few Extremely Fine Mint N.H. singles reached the market in the early 1990s. However, we know of no other imprint single in Mint N.H. condition with centering that even approaches the precision of this stamp. The Scott premium for Mint N.H. -- $5,500.00 versus $1,800.00 -- is too conservative for ordinary singles, in our opinion. For an imprint single of this quality, we expect it will be meaningless to collectors.

FRESH AND EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE $2.00 TRANS-MISSISSIPPI ISSUE.

Mint N.H., well-centered within uncommonly wide margins, extraordinarily fresh, rich color and deeply-etched impression on bright paper

EXTREMELY FINE. A HANDSOME AND SCARCE MINT NEVER-HINGED $2.00 TRANS-MISSISSIPPI.

This stamp was once part of a famous block of ten (position 8) containing eight Mint N.H. examples that was offered in the 1989 Chrisite's sale of the Weill Brothers' stock. All of the stamps in that block are incredibly fresh and pristine. The six middle stamps are particularly well centered and margined. The block was broken up right after the sale. The majority of Extremely Fine Mint N.H. singles of the $2.00 Trans-Mississippi offered in the last 25 years emanated from that block.
