VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE WIDE TOP MINT NEVER-HINGED IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER STRIP OF THREE OF THE $5.00 1895 WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE WE HAVE OFFERED IN AT LEAST 30 YEARS.
A Power Search review reveals how rare Scott 278 is as a Mint N.H. imprint and plate number strip. The only examples we have offered since 1993 were a bottom strip of three (small crease, Sale 1244, lot 373) and a narrow top strip of three with h.r. in selvage (Sale 920, lot 157). This wide top Mint N.H. strip, in sound and centered condition is in a class by itself. It is also an excellent alternative to a plate block, of which only one exists (and catalogues $200,000.00).
With 2013 P.S.E. certificate (VF 80; unpriced in SMQ). Scott does not list a Mint N.H. imprint and plate number strip. Scott value for three Mint N.H. singles is $18,750.00, which does not remotely convey the rarity of this piece.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER STRIP OF THREE OF THE $5.00 1895 WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE.
A Power Search review failed to find another completely Mint N.H. imprint and plate number strip of Scott 278. This is also an excellent alternative to a plate block, of which only one exists (and catalogues $200,000.00). This strip was held for generations after being purchased from the post office in the 1890s.
With 2019 P.S.E. certificate. Scott value for three Mint N.H. singles without premium for the positions.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A TRULY EXCEPTIONAL MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE $5.00 1895 WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE. THIS STAMP STANDS ALONE AS THE HIGHEST GRADED $5.00 1894-95 BUREAU ISSUE, WITH THE P.S.E. GRADE OF SUPERB 98 JUMBO.
This Superb 98 Jumbo $5.00 1895 Issue is truly at the pinnacle of early Bureau issue stamps. The $5.00 1895 Issue is an exceedingly rare stamp in sound, well-centered Mint N.H. condition. This stamp is the highest graded Mint N.H. example, with margin size exceeding the ex-Whitman Superb 98 (Sale 968A, lot 337, realized $65,000 hammer). In surveying the dollar-value 1894-95 Bureau Issues, only the $1.00 Scott 261 has a Mint N.H. stamp in the P.S.E. Population Report with a grade exceeding 98J (a single example at 100). Among the other dollar values (Scott 261A, 262-263, 276-276A and 277) there is not even a single Mint N.H. example graded 98, much less the 98J grade of the $5.00 offered here. For Scott 278, only one Mint N.H. stamp has been graded 98, the aforementioned Whitman copy. Below the 98s, the next Mint N.H. grade drops down to 85.
With 2011 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $110,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by no others

EXTREMELY FINE. A DESIRABLE SOUND AND CENTERED MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE $5.00 1895 WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE.
This stamp was broken from a block of four sometime before 2004. Its partner to its left, with similar centering, realized $15,500 in our 2004 Rarities sale. With copy of 1984 P.F. certificate for block of four, this the top right stamp.

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1895 $5.00 WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE.
With 1997 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85; SMQ $9,200.00). Only two have graded higher to date.

VERY FINE. A SCARCE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1895 $5.00 WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE.
Scarce in Mint N.H. condition.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN INCOMPARABLE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE $5.00 1895 WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE. THIS STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. -- BY FAR THE HIGHEST GRADE TO DATE. A REMARKABLE STAMP THAT WOULD BE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO IMPROVE UPON.
The $5.00 watermarked Bureau issue is an exceedingly rare stamp in sound, well-centered Mint N.H. condition. We have offered only four singles plus a plate number and imprint strip of three since keeping computerized records. This stamp is without question the finest Mint N.H. example extant.
With 1994 P.F. certificate for a strip of three, with 1995 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98). This is the highest graded example in the P.S.E. Population Report. The next highest grade for a Mint N.H. stamp is 85
