Horizontal pair centered to top, used with 1c Ultramarine and 3c Green (156, 158), all tied by bold target cancels, no origination datestamp but likely Richmond Va. based on the correspondence, on 1875 cover to Buenos Aires, Argentina, red "New York 1.10 Jul. 29" credit datestamp (stating the credit in centimes, equivalent to 22c) and red London Paid transit datestamp (Aug. 9) which ties stamps, Buenos Aires receiving backstamp, 1c stamp with small scuff in margin at top, Fine and attractive cover overpaying by 1c the 27c British Mail rate via England (the rate before July 1875 rate was 28c)

FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 12-CENT 1873 CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE PRINTING.

The largest recorded multiple of this issue is a block of six, ex Lilly, Klein and our 1990 Rarities sale. The last unused block we offered in our auctions was in 2001, when Mr. Wingate purchased the example offered here.

With 2014 P.F. certificate (XF 90). This is one of only three original-gum examples of Scott 162 graded 90 by the Philatelic Foundation, with none higher. By way of comparison, P.S.E. has awarded only three a grade of 90 (one of the three is 90J), with none higher
