Sale Number 1196, Lot Number 883, 1870-88 Bank Note Issues7c Vermilion, I. Grill (138A), 7c Vermilion, I. Grill (138A)7c Vermilion, I. Grill (138A). Clearly-defined grill, cancelled by circle of small wedges, "Kittanning Pa. Jan. 28" circular datestamp on cover to Vienna, Austria, red "New York Br. Transit Jan. 31" circular datestamp, receiving backstamp, the year is unclear but may be 1871, slightly reduced at right, Very Fine, a rare use of the 7c I Grill on a cover to Austria, this is the first example on cover we have offered, Scott Catalogue notes the earliest use is 1871, if the yeardate on the receiving marking is 1871, then this January use may be the EDU, worth additional research

Sale Number 1166, Lot Number 782, 1870-73 National and Continental Bank Note Co. Issues (Scott 134-166)7c Vermilion, I. Grill (138A), 7c Vermilion, I. Grill (138A)7c Vermilion, I. Grill (138A). Original gum, strong grill points that are clearly visible, brilliant color

VERY FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE WITH I GRILL.

Starting with the 2013 Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue, the I Grills were elevated to major catalogue number status. The listings are now consistent with other grill types such as A, B, C, D, Z, E and F Grills. Collectors will now have to acquire these I Grills in their quest for completeness. We anticipate that collector demand will be difficult to satisfy based on populations we have seen, especially in original-gum condition.

With 1969 P.F. and 2017 P.S.E. certificates
