Our census of 30c 1869 Inverts, available at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/121b , contains a total of 47 stamps, including 7 unused and 40 used. One used stamp is in the Miller collection owned by The New York Public Library (census no. 39) and another used stamp is in the Tapling collection at the British Library (census no. 40). Most have faults to varying degrees. Of the examples available to collectors, only 13 are sound or potentially sound (six are based on decades-old descriptions and need to be reexamined for condition).

Of the ten used "centered" copies, only three are sound. This example, in sound condition and with Very Fine centering, is a great condition rarity.

Of the confirmed sound copies, this has better centering and a clearer cancel than most.

The circle of V's cancel on this stamp is known on covers from the Davis correspondence, mailed to Peru from New York City in August 1869 (see Chronicle 138, p. 124).

The Scott U.S. Specialized Graded value for a stamp graded Extremely Fine 90 -- in our opinion, this is at least an XF 90 -- is $142,500.00

This stamp is one of the finest centered examples of all, and it has only minor thins that are not visible on the face of the stamp.
