The circle of V's cancel on this stamp is known on covers from the Davis correspondence, mailed to Peru from New York City in August 1869 (see Chronicle 138, p. 124).

The stamp offered here is one of five in the Wide-Spaced centering category (see Chronicle No. 138, May 1988, page 123). The Wide-Spaced stamps have extra wide top and bottom margins. Three of the five Wide-Spaced stamps are centered slightly to left, as is this copy.

Only two have graded higher to date and only one other shares this grade. That said, this Wide-Spaced stamp with rich colors deserves a higher grade in our opinion (VF 80)
