Sale Number 1192, Lot Number 220, 1869 Pictorial Issue (Scott 112-122)30c Ultramarine & Carmine, Flags Inverted (121b), 30c Ultramarine & Carmine, Flags Inverted (121b)30c Ultramarine & Carmine, Flags Inverted (121b). Deep rich colors and detailed impressions, three wide margins, neat strike of New York circle of eight wedges cancel, single nibbed perforation at lower left which is very minor and noted as "slightly short" on certificate

VERY FINE. A RARE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE INVERT WITH WONDERFULLY RICH COLORS. OFFERED TO THE MARKET FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1941.

Our census of 30c 1869 Inverts, available at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/121b , contains a total of 47 stamps, including 7 unused and 40 used (one in the Miller Collection at The New York Public Library and one used in the Tapling Collection at the British Library). Perhaps ten used examples are confirmed as sound. Several have significant faults. The example offered here, with just a single slightly short perf, is essentially sound.

Census No. 121b-CAN-03. Offered to the market for the first time since the 1941 Harmer, Rooke auction of the C. A. Brown collection, where acquired by the family of the current consignor. With 2018 P.F. certificate

Sale Number 1180, Lot Number 180, 1869 Pictorial Issue, Inverts (Scott 120b, 121b)30c Ultramarine & Carmine, Flags Inverted (121b), 30c Ultramarine & Carmine, Flags Inverted (121b)30c Ultramarine & Carmine, Flags Inverted (121b). Unused (no gum), deep rich colors and detailed impressions, unusually choice centering with well-balanced margins, accompanying certificates note "slightly toned" but we do not believe this is toned to a degree that merits mention, small thin spot, sensibly strengthened corner creases at bottom right

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF SEVEN RECORDED UNUSED EXAMPLES OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PCTORIAL INVERT. ONE OF THE GREATEST RARITIES OF UNITED STATES PHILATELY.

Only seven unused examples of the 30c 1869 Pictorial Issue with inverted flags are known. Only one has original gum (recently sold in our auction of the "Beverly Hills" collection for $600,000 hammer). The other six have no gum. Of the seven unused copies, the original-gum example is sound, as is one of the no gum copies (recently offered in our "Hanover" sale in 2016). One other is potentially sound, but has not been seen since 1960.

Census No. 121b-UNC-01. Ex Colonel Green and Frank Joseph, Jr. With 1978 and 2002 P.F. certificates.

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF SEVEN RECORDED UNUSED EXAMPLES OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT, ONLY TWO OR THREE OF WHICH ARE SOUND. ONE OF THE GREATEST RARITIES OF UNITED STATES PHILATELY.
