Observatory, Washington Oct. 20, 1869" double-oval datestamp, receiving backstamps, opened a bit roughly at top, Very Fine, the United States Naval Observatory is one of the oldest scientific agencies in the United States, with a current primary mission to produce positioning, navigation and timing for the United States Navy and the United States Department of Defense, the use of this oval datestamp on an 1869 Pictorial Issue cover is most unusual

Fr. H. No. 4 29 Mai 69" octagonal datestamp applied when placed on the French CGT line's Laurent in New York, forwarding postage paid by France, 1863, 40c Pale Orange (35) tied by star of dots cancel, Paris and London circular datestamps, missing small part of top flap, 15c with tiny flaw at top left not mentioned on accompanying certificate

VERY FINE. A COLOFUL AND RARE USE OF THE 15-CENT TYPE I 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE ON A COVER TO FRANCE, WHICH WAS FORWARDED TO ENGLAND WITH FRENCH POSTAGE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED USES OF THE 15-CENT TYPE I WITH FORWARDING POSTAGE FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY.

This was carried on the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique line’s St. Laurent, which departed New York May 29 and arrived Havre on June 9. It was then forwarded to Baring Brothers in London. The PRA Census lists four examples of Scott 118 used with stamps of another country. Three are with French stamps, forwarded to England (offered here), Switzerland and Belgium. The fourth is forwarded within Italy.

I Pictorial Issue are recorded. We are aware of only two other such combinations to France, one offered in lot 602 and the other last sold in our Sale 948, lot 450.
