12c Green (117). Block of nine with full "National Bank Note Co. New York" imprint bottom selvage, original gum which is naturally short on bottom three stamps, bright shade, some expertly reinforced perf separationsVERY GOOD. AN EXTREMELY RARE BLOCK OF NINE OF THE 12-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE. ESPECIALLY SCARCE WITH THE IMPRINT SELVAGE. THIS IS THE SECOND-LARGEST UNUSED MULTIPLE AND THE ONLY RECORDED IMPRINT BLOCK.
The Rose book notes only six unused blocks larger than four stamps, including off-center blocks of twelve and nine and three blocks of six. We sold another block of nine in our 2013 Rarities sale that is not listed in Rose. All but one of the blocks of six or larger are off center to varying degrees. The block offered here is the only one showing any part of the imprint (there are no blocks showing a plate number).

There are several original-gum blocks of the 12c 1869 Pictorial, ranging in size from four to nine stamps. Nearly all of the unused blocks are more or less off center. This well-centered block is one of the most attractive of all 12c 1869 multiples.

A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF NINE OF THE 12-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE. THIS IS THE SECOND-LARGEST UNUSED MULTIPLE.
The Rose book notes eight unused blocks, including off-center blocks of twelve and nine (not this block). The block offered here has better centering than the other block of nine known to us, with part imprint.

12c Green (117). Horizontal block of six, original gum, deep rich color and proof-like impression, clearly-defined grills, choice centering for this difficult multipleVERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF SIX AND THE FINEST 12-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE BLOCK EXTANT.
The Rose book notes eight unused blocks, including an off-center block of twelve, two blocks of nine and three blocks of six. One of the blocks of nine, with perfs touching on two sides, was offered in our 2009 Rarities sale. The other, with perf separations, is ex Wunderlich and Ishikawa. This is the finest-quality block.
