Sale Number 1206, Lot Number 118, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 79-101)3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C), 3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C)3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C). Unused (no gum), clearly-defined grill, rich color, attractive margins and centering, most recent certificate notes a small stain spot removed at upper right, which we fail to detect, and a small corner crease at bottom right, which is really a bend

VERY FINE APPEARING UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 3-CENT Z GRILL.

The 3c Z Grill was in production for only a short period of time before the device was replaced with the F Grill. Only a small number of 3c sheets were fed thru the Z Grill, which accounts for the rarity of surviving examples, especially in unused condition.

With 1972 and 2018 P.F. certificates

Sale Number 1199, Lot Number 1149, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 79-101)3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C), 3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C)3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C). Choice centering and wide margins, rich color, strong grill impression, lightly cancelled by target

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL LIGHTLY-CANCELLED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1868 3-CENT Z GRILL.

The 3c Z Grill was in production for only a short period of time before the device was replaced with the F Grill. Only a small number of 3c sheets were fed thru the Z Grill, which accounts for the rarity of surviving examples. Our review of past auctions, including Power Search, found precious few sound copies with anything above Very Fine centering.

Ex Kantor and Zoellner. With 1965, 1988, 2004 and 2006 P.F. certificates (VF-XF 85)

Sale Number 1195, Lot Number 355, 1867-68 Grilled Issue: Z Grill3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C), 3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C)3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C). Original gum, lightly hinged, fairly well-centered for this difficult grilled issue, attractive color, clearly-defined grill, light horizontal crease at top

FINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT Z GRILL.

The 3c Z Grill was in production for only a short period of time before the device was replaced with the F Grill. Only a small number of 3c sheets were fed thru the Z Grill, which accounts for the rarity of surviving examples. The stamp offered here is far better centered than most and has only a faint crease.

Sale Number 1195, Lot Number 356, 1867-68 Grilled Issue: Z Grill3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C), 3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C)3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C). Bottom sheet selvage pair with "The National Bank Note Company City o(f New Y-York)" portion of imprint and "No. 35 Plate", original gum, clear grills, bright color, sensibly strengthened along heavy diagonal crease, few short perfs at left not mentioned on accompanying certificate which also does not mention light natural pre-printing paperfolds mostly in selvage (the diagonal crease may in fact be a pre-printing paperfold)

FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS REPORTED TO BE THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT Z GRILL WITH PLATE NUMBER SELVAGE. A PHENOMENAL GRILLED ISSUE RARITY.

The 3c Z Grill was in production for only a short period of time before the device was replaced with the F Grill. Only a small number of 3c sheets were fed through the Z Grill device. A block of four is known with a small part of the imprint at top, but the stamps have holes and thins, and one is repaired. For all 3c stamps (Scott 65, 88, 94 etc.) the full imprint and plate number are found only at the bottom of the sheet. The pair offered here, with the full plate number and a significant portion of the imprint, is a remarkable artifact.

With 1999 P.F. certificate. Durland lists this pair with a value of $100,000.00. Scott Retail as two singles with no premium for the imprint and plate number is $50,000.00

Sale Number 1195, Lot Number 357, 1867-68 Grilled Issue: Z Grill3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C), 3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C)3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C). Block of four with left sheet margin and part original gum, deep shade and strong grill impression on thin paper--unusual for the 3c Z Grill--extra grills in selvage, centered to top right, a few nibbed perfs at top

AS FINE AS THIS EXTREMELY RARE STAMP EXISTS IN BLOCK FORM. ONE OF SIX KNOWN 3-CENT Z GRILL UNUSED BLOCKS.

The deep shade and very thin paper of this block are atypical of many 3c Z Grill stamps (including essays), but match at least two other unused blocks (ex Caspary). 3c sheets were first put through the Z Grill device in January (EDU 1/29/68), then migrated to the D Grill device about one week later (EDU 2/1/68). The 3c Z and D Grill stamps from this period are printed in a pale Rose shade on medium-thick paper, which did not take the grill very well. If our timeline is correct, the Z Grill was still functioning as late as March 17, 1868, and it is possible that some 3c sheets printed in a different shade on thinner paper were run through the Z Grill just before its conversion to the F Grill. Based on quantities delivered to the Stamp Agent and the time period of E Grill production, 3c sheets must have dominated the grilling devices in the February and March 1868.

We located six blocks in a survey of past auction sales and using Power Search for our sales. The block offered here is arguably the finest.

Ex Klein and acquired by Mr. Drews in our 1998 Zoellner sale, where it realized one-third of its then-current Scott Retail value of $34,000.00. With 1975 P.F. certificate

FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE LARGEST RECORDED USED MULTIPLE OF THE 1868 3-CENT Z GRILL. A MARVELOUS SHOWPIECE.

The 3c Z Grill was in production for only a short period of time before the device was replaced with the F Grill, so few multiples are known. Ex Ishikawa. Scott Retail as singles
