Sale Number 1199, Lot Number 1147, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 79-101)2c Black, Z. Grill (85B), 2c Black, Z. Grill (85B)2c Black, Z. Grill (85B). Clearly-defined grill, detailed impression and attractive shade, beautiful centering with balanced margins, bold strike of circle of V's cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNFICENT USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

The plates used to print the Black Jacks did not provide enough space between subjects for the large 12-gauge perf holes. Consequently, most Black Jack stamps have perfs touching the design on one or two sides. This scarcity of four-margined copies multiplies exponentially when the Z Grill is factored into the equation. Only a small quantity of 2c sheets were grilled during the period when the Z device was active -- after the D Grill (Scott 84), the Z is the rarest of Black Jack grilled stamps.

Ex Merlin. With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $12,000.00). Only two have graded higher (at 98).

EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL WITH A BLUE CANCEL

The 2c Z Grill is normally found with black cork cancels. This example, with choice centering and a colored cancel is very desirable.

Sale Number 1197, Lot Number 1693, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 79-101)2c Black, Z. Grill (85B), 2c Black, Z. Grill (85B)2c Black, Z. Grill (85B). Block of four, original gum called "disturbed" on accompanying certificate but it is very typical of the 2c Z Grill and we would not describe it as such, light red offset on gum from 3c 1861 Issue, h.r. at top, clearly-defined grills which show the Z Grill characteristics, horizontal crease at bottom causing some grill point holes, natural pre-print creases in other stamps, tiny thin spots

VERY GOOD APPEARANCE. THIS 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL BLOCK IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL GRILLED ISSUE MULTIPLES. PERHAPS THREE ARE KNOWN AND ALL HAVE SIMILAR CENTERING.

Only a small quantity of 2c sheets were grilled during the period when the Z device was active -- after the D Grill (Scott 84), the Z is the rarest of Black Jack grilled stamps. We were only able to locate two other unused blocks. One was a rejoined block offered in our 2014 Curtis sale (also ex Allen and Metzger), which had traces of original gum. An intact block was offered in our sale of the Richard Drews collection (Siegel Sale 1195, lot 348). The block offered in our 1970 Rarities sale has likely been broken, since the bottom stamps were sound.

With 2018 A.P.S. certificate

VERY FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL.

This is one of the most difficult grilled issues to obtain with decent centering. As further evidence of this stamp's rarity, the P.S.E. Population Report lists only five original gum stamps in any grade, including graded 10 (two), 20, 30 and 50.
