HISTORY AND COMMENTARY

Unused blocks of the 5¢ 1861-68 Jefferson stamps, in any shade and grilled or ungrilled, are rare. The only plate number multiples are a plate block of eight of Scott 76 with "Specimen" overprint, a Scott 76 plate strip of four (Siegel Sale 422, lot 204), and the strip offered here. The only other recorded plate number multiple is the 5¢ F Grill (Scott 95) block of six offered in this sale as lot 86.

Sale Number 1192, Lot Number 171, 1861-66 Issue (Scott 56-78)5c Brown (76), 5c Brown (76)5c Brown (76). Original gum, deep rich color and proof-like impression, unusually choice centering with balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1863 5-CENT BROWN, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95. A DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND IN SUCH SUPERB CONDITION -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED AND IT IS SHARED BY ONLY ONE OTHER.

The 5c 1861-68 Issue was printed from plates with closely-spaced subjects that left little room for the large 12-gauge perforations. The Brown shade, Scott 76, is scarce in original-gum condition, and truly rare in this high grade.

With 1995 P.F. and 2016 P.S.E. certificates (OGh, XF-Superb 95; SMQ $6,500.00). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by only one other, which we last offered in 2009.

Sale Number 1180, Lot Number 125, 1861-66 Issue (Scott 63-78)5c Brown (76), 5c Brown (76)5c Brown (76). Original gum, lightly hinged, beautifully centered, brilliant shade and proof-like impression

EXTREMELY FINE. MAGNIFICENT QUALITY FOR THE 5-CENT BROWN 1863 ISSUE, WHICH RARELY COMES WELL-CENTERED WITH FULL ORIGINAL GUM.

The 5c Brown stamp in the 1861-66 series is one of those that challenges collectors who demand choice original-gum examples. The vast majority of 5c Brown stamps are off-center, faulty or without gum. By virtue of its pristine lightly hinged original-gum and choice centering, the example offered here is truly rare.
