Sale Number 1219, Lot Number 218, 1861-66 Issue, cont. (Scott 75-78c)5c Brown (76), 5c Brown (76)5c Brown (76). Rich color, cancelled by full clear strike of Union Soldier's Head fancy cancel of New York City (Skinner-Eno PH-F 73), centered slightly to right, Very Fine strike of this rare fancy cancel, the creation and use of this cancel in the Spring of 1866 coincided with the return of soldiers from the Civil War, it is known on at least one domestic cover, but apparently the cancelling device migrated to the foreign-mail exchange office, where it was used to cancel stamps on mail to foreign countries, as such it is most often found on 24c and 30c 1861 Issues, this is the only one on the 5c we have offered since keeping computerized records, a true rarity, ex Saadi, with 1997 and 2014 P.F. certificates

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1863 5-CENT BROWN. SCARCE WITH SUCH CHOICE CENTERING.

Brookman notes "it is far from easy to find a copy that is well-centered". We agree.

Ex Merlin. With 1999 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $1,350.00). Only two have graded higher (at 95J, ex "Natalee Grace" and 100, realized $6,750 hammer in 2018 Rarities sale). Thirteen others share this grade but they they rarely come on the market -- this is the first we have offered since 2012.

Sale Number 1185, Lot Number 42, 1861-66 Issue5c Brown (76), 5c Brown (76)5c Brown (76). Mathematically perfect centering with wide and balanced margins, long and full perforations all around, deep rich color, neat strike of quartered cork cancel is basically face free

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS STUNNING USED STAMP IS GRADED GEM 100 BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS BY FAR THE HIGHEST GRADE RECORDED IN ANY CATEGORY.

Due to narrow spacing on the 5c plate used for the regular issues from 1861 through 1868, it is very difficult to find centered copies with the perforations clear of the design on all sides. The stamp offered here, with its perfect centering and perforations well clear of the design on all sides, is the first to achieve the exalted grade of Gem 100.

With 2001 P.F. and 2016 P.S.E. certificates (Gem 100; SMQ $7,500.00). This is the highest grade recorded and the only example to achieve it. The next highest grade is one at 95J. The highest grade for an example with original gum is 95.
