Sale Number 1219, Lot Number 130, 10c-12c 1857-60 Issue (Scott 31-36B)12c Black, Plate 1 (36), 12c Black, Plate 1 (36)12c Black, Plate 1 (36). Well-balanced margins, cancelled by bold strike of green circular grid of small squares and rectangles

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1857 ISSUE FROM PLATE 1 WITH A GREEN CANCEL.

The cancel on this stamp is a true green color, not bluish-green or an adulterated green ink. The cancel's unusual configuration and distinctive green color make this 12c 1857 stamp one of the most striking we have ever encountered.

Ex Saadi. With 1994 and 2014 P.F. certificates

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1857 ISSUE FROM PLATE ONE IS GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED.

Due to narrow spacing on the plate, most examples of this stamp have perforations touching at least part of the outer frameline of the design. The example offered here has far wider margins than most.

Ex Merlin. With 1989, 2003 and 2007 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98; SMQ $10,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded and only three others share it. This is the first we have offered in this grade since 2012.

Sale Number 1163, Lot Number 38, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 19-39)12c Black, Plate 1 (36), 12c Black, Plate 1 (36)12c Black, Plate 1 (36). Position 71R1, unusually choice centering with interpane margin and guideline at left, sharp proof-like impression, face-free strike of circular datestamp, Extremely Fine Gem, a stunning stamp, ex Wagshal, with 2010 P.S.E. certificate (VF 80; SMQ $350.00), this is an example where numerical grading fails to reflect the quality and desirability of a stamp -- P.S.E. deducts points for a natural straight edge as though it were a fault -- though we feel this stamp is even more desirable with the guideline interpane margin
