Sale 1129, Lot 334, 1857-60 Issue5c Brown (29). Original gum, deep rich color and proof-like impression, choice centering for this difficult issue

VERY FINE. A SCARCE SOUND AND WELL-CENTERED ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 5-CENT BROWN TYPE I, SCOTT 29.

For some reason, most original-gum examples of this issue are either off center or have small faults. Although centered closer to top, this is one of the choicer examples.

Ex Caspary and Curtis as part of a strip of four. With 2014 P.F. certificate as strip of four.

Sale 1109, Lot 494, 1c-5c 1857-60 Issue, Off-Cover (Scott 19-30A)5c Brown (29). Disturbed original gum and adherence, well-centered with nice margins for this tightly-spaced issue, couple slightly toned perfs at top, most recent P.F. certificate opines reperfed at right, but it is not in our opinion (gauge and hole dimensions are precisely right, but the one errant perf hole tricked the P.F. into thinking it's reperfed), Very Fine appearance, with 1976 and 1989 P.F. certificates as sound, with 2014 P.F. certificate as "previously hinged with some toned perfs and reperfed at right"

FRESH AND FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 5-CENT BROWN TYPE I.

This is most definitely the 1859 printing in Brown, but the shade of this stamp is distinctly darker than most examples of Scott 29 we have encountered.

Sale 1084, Lot 3135, 3c-5c 1857-60 Issue (Scott 25-30A)5c Brown (29). Horizontal strip of four, original gum, lightly hinged, rich color, detailed impression

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM STRIP OF FOUR OF THE 1857 5-CENT BROWN. THE LARGEST RECORDED UNUSED MULTIPLE OF THIS ISSUE IS A MULTIPLE OF FOUR (BLOCK OR STRIP). A FANTASTIC SHOWPIECE.

The largest recorded unused multiple of Scott 29 is one containing four stamps. Three blocks of four are known -- the most recent was offered in our 2009 Whitman sale and realized $125,000 hammer. Perhaps two or three strips of four are also known.

Ex Caspary. Scott Retail $24,500.00 as strip of three and single.
