EXTREMELY FINE GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1857 TYPE IV.

The ready availability of 3c 1851-57 stamps gives some collectors the false impression that superb examples, even of a better type, are easily obtainable. Yet with grading approaching its 20th year, only four used examples of Scott 26A have achieved a 95J grade or higher (highest is the Gem 100 offered in our 2019 Rarities sale).

With 2014 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $3,150.00). One shares this grade and only two grade higher

Position 2L11E, gorgeous deep rich color, perfs clear of design on all sides, neat circular datestamp cancel, Very Fine and choice, one of the rarest of all the 3c 1857 color shades and seldom offered, Scott lists this shade for the Type III No. 26 and prices it at $550.00 (50-times the price for Dull Red), it is unlisted as the better Type IV but since No. 26A is priced at 15-times No. 26, the math should make this a high catalogue value stamp

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1857 TYPE IV IN THE FINEST CONDITION ATTAINABLE. THIS BEAUTIFUL STAMP IS GRADED GEM 100 BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE.

The ready availability of 3c 1851-57 stamps gives collectors the false impression that superb examples, even of a better type, are easily obtainable. Yet with grading well into its 14th year, this is the sole example of a 3c Type IV stamp to achieve this Gem 100 grade.

With 2013 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; SMQ $9,750.00). This is the highest grade awarded and the only example to achieve it. No others are even close -- the next highest grade is a 98 (one copy) followed by two at 95J.
