Sale Number 1219, Lot Number 94, 1c 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-24)1c Blue, Ty. V (24), 1c Blue, Ty. V (24)1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Wide and perfectly balanced margins, pretty shade nicely complemented by bold red grid cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB JUMBO USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE V. DESPITE THIS STAMP'S READY AVAILABILITY, IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FIND IN SUCH SUPERB CONDITION.

Despite the abundant supply of Type V stamps, they are extremely difficult to obtain in the higher grades -- especially with a colored cancel. The stamp offered here has phenomenal visual appeal -- bright color, a beautiful clear red grid cancel, wide and balanced margins and wonderful overall freshness.

Ex Dr. Morris, Dr. Puliafito and "Natalee Grace". With 1991 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $1,500.00). Only two grade higher (at 98 and 98J) and only two others shares this desirable grade. Of the four equal or higher grades, we have offered three of them (one 95J, the 98 and the 98J) and all have black cancels.

The Ambassador J. William Middendorf II Collection

Sale Number 1216, Lot Number 111, 1c 1857 Perforated Issue: Plate 51c Blue, Ty. V (24), 1c Blue, Ty. V (24)1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Positions 31/41L5, vertical pair with “Toppan, Carpenter & Co. BANK NOTE E(NGRAVERS)” portion of imprint and “No. 5” plate number in selvage at left, rich color and fine impression, cancelled by two strikes of “Dec. 19” town datestamp, few faults including tear in selvage and creases in stamps and selvage

FINE APPEARANCE. AN IMPORTANT PLATE 5 MULTIPLE, SHOWING A LARGE PORTION OF THE IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER FROM THE LEFT PANE.

This pair is illustrated in the Neinken book on page 332 and is regarded as one of the most significant imprint and plate number examples from Plate 5. Only one example of a right pane imprint copy from Plate 5 is known with any part of the plate number (see Wagshal Sale 1006, lot 1219). At this point in time the plates were produced with the imprint omitting “Casilear” from the firm name, but traces of it can still be seen in the “&”.

Illustrated in Neinken book (p. 332). Ex Neinken and Wagshal
