Position 16R5, essentially perfect centering with choice balanced margins, unusually bright shade, town cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, a superb example of this better type which comes only from Plate 5, on most Type V stamps there are very noticeable scratch marks in the margins at the right, which were present on the transfer roll, however, the first transfer roll had the design more complete at sides and did not have the scratches at sides, Brookman notes that "While I can give no estimate of the number of stamps printed from this plate I believe it was not many because of the scarcity of Type Va stamps.", ex Kirke, with 2005 P.F. and P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; unpriced in SMQ as Ty. Va, SMQ $825.00 as normal and much more common Ty. V)

Positions 7-9/17-19/27-29/37-39/49/59/69R5, irregular block of 15, cancelled by "Jewett City Ct. Feb. 22" circular datestamps and "PAID" handstamps neatly applied, due to its size we did not dip this but it looks to be in excellent condition aside from a small tear in the bottom stamp

VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE BLOCK OF 15 OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE Va. THIS IS ONE OF THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLES FROM PLATE 5.

This scarce sub-type, Type Va, comes only from Plate 5. The ornaments at right are almost complete, and they do not have any of the scratches at sides that are seen on the Type V stamps. The largest recorded multiples from Plate 5 are a block of 20, followed by this block of 15. This block is noted on pp. 324-325 of the Neinken book.

Ex Hollowbush. One stamp signed Ashbrook and with his plating notes on two stamps "7R6" and "9R6", made prior to the confirmation that there was no Plate 6.
