VERY FINE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE EARLY STATE DIE ESSAY FOR THE 5-CENT 1861 FIRST DESIGN.
In common with the 5c First Design (Scott 57), this essay lacks the lines in Jefferson's hair as compared to the issued stamps (Scott 67, 75-76 and 95), giving the appearance of a "high part". This state of the die also lacks the ornaments in the corners as seen on Scott 57 and its related proofs. The thin border surrounding the design is present but is blank at the corners. This is the only recorded example of this state of the die for the 5c 1861 Issue. Scott Retail is woefully out of date, as this is priced at less than the 5c First Design trial color proof (Scott 67-E9, or 57TC), despite the relative abundance of those (we have sold at least four)
