Sale Number 1195, Lot Number 55, 1861-66 Envelope EssaysNational Bank Note Co., 3c Orange Brown on White entire, 1861 Issue Essay (Undersander E-27E), National Bank Note Co., 3c Orange Brown on White entire, 1861 Issue Essay (Undersander E-27E)National Bank Note Co., 3c Orange Brown on White entire, 1861 Issue Essay (Undersander E-27E). Sealed with gummed flaps, "From the National Bank Note Company, No. 1 Wall St., N.Y." imprint at top left, brilliant color

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF ONLY FOUR OR FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY 1861 ISSUE ENVELOPE ESSAY, AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE WITH THE COMPANY IMPRINT.

A review using Power Search reveals the rarity of these National Bank Note Company envelope essays. Search using the term "Undersander" and more than 100 envelopes come up, but nearly all are 1869 Pictorial or 1870 Bank Note Issues. None we have sold come from the 1861 Issue. These 3c envelopes and the 1c envelopes that precede these are among the great essay-proof rarities of the 1861 Issue.

It is interesting to note that of the seven envelope essays contained in the Drews collection, only this and the unique 15c example have sealed and gummed flaps and the return address imprint. It may be that NBNCo. actually intended to use these from its offices on Wall Street. We would surely like to see one that went through the mails.

Undersander value, which we believe is very out of date

E
Sale Number 909, Lot Number 1120, 1867 Essays (National Bank Note Co.)3c 1861 Issue, Numeral "3" Essays (65-E var), 3c 1861 Issue, Numeral "3" Essays (65-E var)3c 1861 Issue, Numeral "3" Essays (65-E var). Four items, each with large "3" of slightly different design, including bottom margin horizontal pair of No. 65 with large "3" in purple and red, right margin copy of No. 65 with large "3" in blue with "0" and "100", bottom margin copy of No. 65 with imprint and faint large black "3", last is top margin perforated and gummed essay with partly hand-drawn large "3" with "1" and "100", fresh and bright colors

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXTREMELY RARE GROUP OF NUMERAL ESSAYS FOR THE 3-CENT 1861 ISSUE. WE ARE UNAWARE OF THE EXISTENCE OF ANY OTHERS.

Each of the essays offered here shows a slightly different "3". The lines are thicker on some, there are double-lines on one, and one has the hollowed "3" partly filled with hand-drawn lines. These are unlisted in either Scott or Brazer, and we have been unable to find any reference to them in Essay-Proof literature. Their origin and maker remain a mystery, although they were clearly part of the many experiments to prevent cancellation removal in the 1860's.
