FRESH AND VERY FINE. THESE REMARKABLE SAFETY PAPER ESSAYS REPRESENT TWO OF THE THREE SCOTT-LISTED COLORS FOR THE TYPE 12 SAFETY PAPER, AND WERE MADE FROM THE SAME PIECE OF SAFETY PAPER. EACH IS UNIQUE.
The Scott Catalogue lists Orange Brown, Deep Blue and Blue Green designs with the same deep scarlet underprinting. Each is unique. As our digital reconstruction below shows, these originated from the same piece of safety paper, which was cut apart prior to printing.
Both are ex Earl of Crawford and the first is ex Finkelburg. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time these have been reunited since Lord Crawford's collection was dispersed in 1915.
