EXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONE OF THE TWO FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 90 CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE IN USED CONDITION. ONLY FOUR USED COPIES ARE KNOWN TO EXIST. AN OUTSTANDING CLASSIC RARITY.
The footnote in Scott Catalogue at the end of the Re-Issue section states that "Five examples are recorded of No. 111 used. Value is for centered and sound example (two are known thus.)" In the course of verifying this census information, we were only able to produce four copies. Consultations with leading experts in the field and with James E. Kloetzel, editor of Scott Catalogue, failed to produce a confirmed fifth copy. If the existence of a fifth copy cannot be confirmed, the Scott Catalogue will be amended starting with next year's edition to reflect the accurate census number.
The four recorded copies of this stamp are as follows: 1) Census No. 111-CAN-01, sound and well-centered stamp, ex Zoellner, lot 275 (realized $40,000); 2) Census No. 111-CAN-02, the stamp offered here; 3) Census No. 111-CAN-03, sound, duplex cancel, centered slightly to top, from our 1986 Rarities sale (lot 97); and 4) Census No. 111-CAN-04, centered to top, small corner creases at top left with one ending in a small tear, offered in the Ameripex auction.
With 1977 P.F. certificate

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS STAMP IS CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE FINEST 90 CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE IN USED CONDITION, OF WHICH FIVE ARE BELIEVED TO BE EXTANT. AN OUTSTANDING CLASSIC RARITY.
