Sale Number 1227, Lot Number 2286, 1875 Reprint of 1857-60 Issue (Scott 40-47)3c Scarlet, Reprint (41), 3c Scarlet, Reprint (41)3c Scarlet, Reprint (41). Without gum as issued, phenomenal centering with balanced margins well clear of framelines on all sides, vivid color and proof-like impression

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1857 REPRINT, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. -- EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST EXTANT.

The Continental Bank Note Company made a new plate for the 3c 1857 Reprint, consisting of 100 subjects. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). 479 of the 3c were sold, and the remaining 9,521 were destroyed on July 23, 1884, by order of the Postmaster General.

A survey of P.S.E. graded reprints of the 1857-60 Issue reveals a fact that will come as no surprise to serious students of these stamps. Sound, well-centered examples above the 1c are extremely rare. This is one of only two 3c graded 95, with only one higher at 95J. Among all the 1857-60 Reprints above the 1c (which was printed in much larger quantities) only five other stamps have graded 95 (two 5c, one 10c and two 90c).

With 2003 P.F., 2005 and 2017 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $15,000.00)
